Christopher walks with his father towards the edge of the shore. Clouds swell on the sky from the west so that its vast expanse appears bruised. He can see the last translucent patches of cloud attempting to prolong the light of today. However, Christopher knows that darkness is inevitable. His feet sink slightly into the sand each time he takes a step. This sand is not like the powder-fine, golden particles that fill most beaches, but instead it is dark grey, the texture of cement. The stillness pinches at my chest; I can feel myself expanding with expectation and anxiety. My palms become sweaty and I wipe them together, clutching and intertwining my own fingers. Breathe. The salt hits my nose and tongue immediately, already causing my heart to lighten. I tread the familiar path through rough shrubs and curving sand dunes. Although I know this place well, today I stumble like a ballet dancer giving their first performance. I allow the steady rhythm of the waves to calm me, wash over me and settle above my beating heart. My eyes sting as I squint into the sun, whose rays send flashes of light upon the surface of the ocean. I wonder why it's still shining. I can see it now. PART ONE Kate watches the circle of dust that caresses her boots for a moment before she kicks up. The dust is sent sprawling in front of her, a disintegrated fan. got my final school results today. for the aussies- ENTER: 96.15 for anyone else- it's good. :P WOW. I am still in a state of shock. I juuuust missed out on dux by 2 marks, but second best ain't too bad :D what a relief. took me almost two hours to get through internet/phone to find out. how exhausting! i need a lie down.
